Pelions Hut is 'traditionally' the place to stay on the the third night on the Overland Track walk. It is a new well-facilitated hut overlooking a beautiful plain. The hut sleeps about 40 people quite comfortably, with great tables for preparing and eating meals (must bring own cookers), drying gear, etc. There is a heater, but is only for use if the temperature drops below 10oC.

We walked in from the West, which is the Arm River walk. We drove through Mole Creek to the start of the track. The track starts with 2 small river crossings, then heads almost vertical before it opens out onto the tableland. The track meanders across an amazing variety of micro-climates and isolated pockets of diverse vegatation. The views are spactacular at times, and simpy beautiful otherwise.

There is a lot of wildlife in the area as well. We saw the usual array of birdlife, wallabies, a shy echidna and two Tiger snakes. Beware that Tiger snakes do inhabit the area, so make sure you wear gators and keep an eye out. Simply treat a Tiger snake with respect, and give it plenty of distance, and it shouldnt bother you at all.

This is an excellent option for people with some hiking gear, but not enogh for very bad weather or extended walks. Doing a reasonably tough walk, but camping in the hut makes a great compromise, and allows access to some of the most extraordinary wilderness regions in the world.
