Side trips -
Metro Bus to Fern Tree, then walk one of several tracks to summit. ~ 5 hour round trip walking from bus stop.

Mount Wellington has spectacular views of Hobart and the surrounds. The views extend to the Derwent River mouth, and even further. I will read up more and improve this information panel. The important thing is that you should go! Not many people visit the summit at night, but this is something I highly recommend.

There are several guided tours for around $40 for a half day. There is the hire car option, or you can take the local Metro bus. The bus goes to Fern Tree, costs about $3, and leaves from just around the corner from Central City Backpackers. There are several options of tracks when you get there, and it is about a 5 hour walk to the top and back from the bus stop.

On a serious note, the summit can be extremely cold, even if it is nice down below. Take something windproof and warm.

Personally, I would recommend combining Mount Wellington with another day activity like Port Arthur or Richmond (best with a car), or even the Cadbury Chocolate Factory or a Wildlife Park. In winter, there can be cloud on the mountain in the morning, or mist over Hobart, so visit the summit in the afternoon.
